Director System Requirements

Minimum system requirements

The following requirements must be met for the Security Validation Director to function properly. These requirements are the same for virtual appliance and installable software Directors:

4.14.0.0 and later

Specification Director Minimum Requirement

Processor

64-bit x86 CPU with at least 4 cores

Memory

16 GB

Disk Storage

Virtual Appliance: 500 GB of free disk space for Director files and database storage

Installer: 160 GB  of free disk space for Director files and database storage

Network Interfaces

A static, routable IP address

Symlinking the Install Directory is not supported, so it is important that you dedicate enough memory to the Validation Platform.

4.13.0.0 and earlier*

Specification Director Minimum Requirement

Processor

64-bit x86 CPU with at least 4 cores

Memory

16GB

Disk Storage

160GB of free disk space for Director files and database storage

Network Interfaces

A static, routable IP address

Symlinking the Install Directory is not supported, so it is important that you dedicate enough memory to the Validation Platform.

* As of June 30, 2024, CentOS 7, the underlying operating system for Directors prior to 4.14.0.0, will be End of Life (EOL), therefore no longer supported as a base operating system for MSV Directors. Plan to upgrade to 4.14.0.0 or later on the Rocky Linux platform as soon as possible. See Upgrade Security Validation Components to Rocky Linux 8 for more information.

These requirements are form-factor specific and are only required when there are separate partitions:

Specification Form factor Director minimum requirement
/opt Installable software A minimum of 80 GB with 9 GB free for Director upgrades
/var/lib/pgsql Installable software A minimum of 80 GB
/usr Installable software A minimum of 20 GB with 9 GB free for Director upgrades

Supported environments

The Director can be installed in one of the following environments:

  • VMware ESXi 7.02 (hardware version 19)
  • Oracle VirtualBox
  • RHEL 7 (7.0 to 7.x)
  • RHEL 8 (8.0 to 8.x)
  • Rocky Linux 8
  • CentOS 7 (7.0 to 7.x)*

Web client requirements

The following table lists the web client requirements for the Security Validation Director.

Display resolution 1280x1024 and higher
Supported browsers
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge

Memory Reservation on Virtual Machines

To avoid performance issues, you must ensure that your resources are reserved and are not dynamically provisioned. Failure to reserve minimum required resources may result in unsatisfactory performance or a failure to start. You can search your virtualization product's knowledge base for "Allocate Memory Resources". For ease of access, vSphere 7.0 instructions, which closely match other versions, are available in VMware's Allocate Memory Resources article, https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/com.vmware.vsphere.vm_admin.doc/GUID-49D7217C-DB6C-41A6-86B3-7AFEB8BF575F.html.

Recommendations for hosted cloud deployments

If you are installing your Director in a supported cloud environment, see the following sections for recommended deployments:

Google Cloud

If you are installing your Director on Google Cloud, choose an e2-standard-8 machine type with the following specifications:

  • 200 GB disks
  • 8 CPU
  • 32GB RAM

For more information, see E2 machine types in the Google Cloud documentation.

Amazon Web Services

If you are installing your Director on Amazon Web Services (AWS) using an AMI file or any of the other form factors, choose an Amazon EC2 or RDS instance that supports your expected throughput and network performance.

Recommended Instance Type EC2 or RDS Network Performance ** Notes
M5.xlarge EC2 up to 10 Gbps
db.m5.xlarge RDS up to 10 Gbps
T3.xlarge / T3a.xlarge EC2 Up to 5 Gbps Recommended for smaller Director deployments (limited integrations, minimal Actors, and a low job execution volume)
T2.xlarge EC2 Moderate

** Network Performance is based on information from Amazon

Microsoft Azure

If installing your Director on Microsoft Azure, choose an Azure type that has at least 4 CPU and 16GB RAM. One such option is the Standard_D4_v4 type.
